Thick glass bongs are the golden standard in the bong world. If you’ve ever asked experienced stoners how to choose a bong, you must have heard the advice that the glass should be thick. And that’s exactly what these Molino bongs offer. Be it a straight tube bong or a beaker bong, a well-made thick glass bong is a reliable device that will let you smoke in style.
Here at Molino, we make most of our bongs and water pipes with thick glass: ranging from 5 mm to 9 mm. However, we’ve included only the 7mm and 9mm bongs in the thick glass category because that’s some serious thickness and that’s what we are all about here.
The key feature of a thick glass bong is the glass itself. Molino Glass Bongs use high-quality Pyrex glass. The glass is made from borosilicate instead of silicate (normal glass) which makes it much less fragile and resistant to temperature changes and yes, fire (and ice, if that’s your thing).
Thick glass bongs come in different shapes and sizes so you can choose what suits your style best. The typical thick glass bong is the so-called “straight tube bong”. That’s the standard bong with a long, straight, cylindrical body.
What you might not know is that there are other options made of thick glass too – like the ‘scientific glass bongs’ AKA beaker bongs. Although those are usually made with thinner glass, here at Molino you’ll find beaker bongs made with extra thick glass too.
No matter which style you prefer, each of our thick glass bongs has been crafted with precision to provide the ultimate experience.
Yes, thick glass bongs are definitely better than bongs made with thin glass! Very thin glass is just too fragile, so unless you want to use your water pipe only to decorate your shelf, you better get one made with thicker glass.
Thick glass does not only make the bong look more robust, but it makes it more stable and much less likely to break. Breaking the bong is the main problem with glass bongs, as accidents happen way too easily when your blazing tool of choice is made of thin, fragile glass. Cleaning up tiny pieces of glass is not something anyone wants to deal with in the middle of a smoking session, and luckily, with thick glass bongs, you will not have to.
The only types of bongs that are less likely to break than thick glass bongs are bongs made from acrylic or silicone. However, those have other downsides. Above all, the feel of such synthetic materials is nowhere near the feeling you get when smoking from real glass.
The glass used to make thick glass bongs is known as Pyrex glass or Borosilicate glass. This is a heat-resistant type of glass that is much stronger than regular glass. What makes Borosilicate glass unique is the use of boron in the manufacturing process – hence the term ‘borosilicate’ – this glass is made using mainly silica and boron. The glass made this way does not expand when exposed to heat, unlike normal glass, which makes it perfect for making bongs. Among other things Pyrex glass is used to make cookware, scientific equipment, lighting fixtures and the like.
Depending on the model, Molino Glass Bongs are available in 5 mm, 7 mm, or 9 mm thick borosiliate glass.
The 7 mm and 9 mm versions fall into the thick glass bong category.
First of all, it is important to note that the thickness of the glass does not in any way influence the performance of your bong. However, there are other perks choosing the right type of glass can bring.
When it comes to bongs, 5 mm is the ‘basic’ thickness. These kinds of bongs are lighter and can feel a bit fragile. Some users actually prefer the feel of thinner bongs, but keep in mind that such a bong is much more likely to break if you drop it.
Thicker bongs (7 mm or 9 mm) are more robust and more stable, which usually leads to a more comfortable experience. Thicker glass also heats up much slower, so your bong will always feel cool. The main downside of thick glass bongs is the weight, but if you plan to keep your bong stationary, this should not be a problem.
